Turkey expert on Erdogan’s referendum: 'A return to the nineties'

Turkey is currently on everybody’s lips: On April 16, the country votes in a referendum that could dramatically change the constitution by heavily concentrating powers in the hands of the presidency. A vote in favor would mark the biggest political change in Turkey since Kemal Ataturk founded the republic in 1923.

Our guest Kemal Kirisci, the director of the Centre on the US and Europe's Turkey Project at Brookings in Washington as well as of the Turkey Project Policy Papers series, says the referendum is “saddening”, saying Turkey hasn’t been “exposed to a fair, balanced debate” prior to the vote.
